Satan’s First Sin

Notes from Stephen Bohr’s “The Genesis Code”

Rev 12:3  … a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.
Rev 12:4  His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth

The arguments of Satan must’ve been pretty powerful to convince one third of all the angels.

Ezekiel 28:16, 18

(Eze 28:16)  “By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones.

(Eze 28:18)  “You defiled your sanctuaries By the multitude of your iniquities, By the iniquity of your trading; Therefore I brought fire from your midst; It devoured you, And I turned you to ashes upon the earth In the sight of all who saw you.

Trading: H7404

רכלּה

rekûllâh

rek-ool-law’

Feminine passive participle of H7402; trade (as peddled): – merchandise, traffic.

(Eze 22:9)  In you are men who slander to cause bloodshed; in you are those who eat on the mountains; in your midst they commit lewdness.

Slander:  H7400

רכיל

râkîyl

raw-keel’

From H7402; a scandal monger (as travelling about): – slander, carry tales, talebearer.

(Lev 19:16)  You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.

Talebearer:  H7400 (see above)

So the first sin was lying or gossiping about God. When someone tells you a lie: “You can’t sell me that one.” “I don’t buy that.” Jesus repeats this trait of Satan:

(Joh 8:44)  You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

What was the subject of the first lie? The character of God.  “God is a despot and a dictator, His laws are restrictive and He permits no one to think anything contrary to what God says.

Gen 3:1  Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Gen 3:3  … God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”

Gen 3:4  Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

Gen 3:5  For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Satan tells lies about God’s character and about God’s law, and if God obliterated Satan and all of his angels, the loyal angels would have had justification to believe Satan’s lies.  God had a cosmic mess on his hands.

Solution: allow Satan to establish his style of government without law and demonstrate to the whole universe what the results are.

The Lesson of the World Is That Transgression of the law leads to sickness, slavery, and sorrow and finally to death.

Adam and Eve broke all of the commandments by eating from the tree. Stealing what was not given to them, bringing death to themselves and the whole human race, putting themselves as gods before God, coveting that which they did not have, honoring their heavenly father, etc.

So the first sin was gossiping and lying, and the information that we must know about is the full character and law of God.

God initially created everything perfect. He saw everything that he had made and declared that it was very good:

Genesis 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

In the temptation story, “the serpent” slanders God. This implies that the serpent was not made during creation week or that the power controlling the serpent predated or was separate from the seven days of creation:

Genesis 3:4-5 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Other locations in the Bible describe Satan, describe a war in heaven, and the “serpent of old” “ancient serpent” is named as the devil or Satan:

Revelation 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Satan had another name, Lucifer, who was created perfect in heaven and had a very highly exalted position until he choose iniquity:

Ezekiel 28:13-15 You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.
14 “ You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
. Till iniquity was found in you.

Remember that by Jesus all things created in heaven and earth:

Colossians 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

Note the characteristic of Lucifer described here as the anointed cherub who covers:

Ezekiel 28:14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

Cherubim are described in the Exodus Tabernacle sanctuary as two angels on either side of the ark extending their wings over the mercy seat. The mercy seat is the site of glory of God in the center of the most holy place. This implies that the wings of these angels covered God Himself:

Exodus 25:19-20 Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other end; you shall make the cherubim at the two ends of it of one piece with the mercy seat. 20 And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat.

Keep in mind that the sanctuary is a scale model of what is in heaven:

Hebrews 8:4-5 For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; 5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

There is also a temple of God in heaven and an ark of the covenant in heaven:

Revelation 11:19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail.

The tables of stone containing the 10 Commandments are stored inside in ark. The ark physically shining with God’s presence and representing God directly is intrinsically tied to the 10 Commandments that God personally spoke to the whole nation. It’s not much of a stretch to assume that these commitments are a foundation of God’s government:

Deuteronomy 10:1-2 “At that time the LORD said to me, ‘Hew for yourself two tablets of stone like the first, and come up to Me on the mountain and make yourself an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke; and you shall put them in the ark.’

Satan’s character described in contrast: “by the abundance of your trading”

Ezekiel 28:16 By the abundance of your trading
You became filled with violence within,
And you sinned;
Therefore I cast you as a profane thing
Out of the mountain of God;
And I destroyed you, O covering cherub,
. From the midst of the fiery stones.

Trading may not make sense unless we understand that the root word “slander” as used in the verse above is identical to “trading.” The devil’s character is fixated upon deceit and criticism:

Ezekiel 22:9 In you are men who slander to cause bloodshed; in you are those who eat on the mountains; in your midst they commit lewdness.

The devil sinned from the beginning, not just from Sinai, not just after the 10 commandments were given to Israel:

1 John 3:8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

The initial test in the Garden of Eden encapsulated all of the commandments into a single test:

Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Too many Christians have accepted Satan’s false premise: the delusion that we can define good and evil without depending on God:

Genesis 3:4-5 Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

The problem of sin is deeper then code of rules that is a violated. It is a poison has become the essence of our character. We sin in the heart. It is a self-deluding “I problem” that began with Lucifer. Note the statement “I” appears 6 times in the verses below. Satan like us made himself nearsighted. Self-focus is the root of breaking God’ s law:

Isaiah 14:12-14 “ How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:

‘ I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
. I will be like the Most High.’

Satan was created beautiful, with wisdom, riches, and power unsurpassed by any of the other angels. He corrupted himself with these traits:

Ezekiel 28:11-14 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD:
“ You were the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.
14 “ You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
. You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.

  1. Hello, A very good article. It is my opinion that Isaiah 14 does not speak about Satan/Lucifer, but about the king of Babylon(v.4) and about a man, not a cherub (v.16).
